Pro-Animal: PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has proposed their million dollar challenge. PETA’s challenge is to any scientist who can successfully create and market in vitro meat. What does this entail? Well, the scientist who decides to undertake this challenge will have to use stem cell technology to create chicken that could be bought and sold in normal grocery stores. PETA sees this as the perfect compromise. Vegetarians will have another protein source that didn’t harm animals in order to be created, and the carnivores can finally leave the vegetarians alone. While I think a million dollars is a little too low a payment for the revolution this technology will cause, I applaud PETA for not closing their eyes to the promise of stem cell research. Go Stem Cells!
Anti-Human: The plastic surgery craze has been around for years. At first, it was easy to blame celebrities for raising the standards of beauty to the unattainable, but now it’s time to look at ourselves. A recent article on MSNBC.com detailed some of the most unbelievable surgeries that are gaining popularity and the tradeoffs such surgeries can bring. One of those becoming more popular? Butt implants. Yes, yes I know, it sounds ridiculous, but according to Dr. David Alessi, the Brazilian model look (maybe the Hills look) is in and that means bigger booties. The implant procedure is very similar to that of a breast implant, but the shock these implants have to withstand is much greater, leading them to be more likely to rupture. Other odd surgeries? Labia reduction, belly button reshaping, and toe adjustments are just a few. The reasons? Well who wants to wear heels when you have short toes?
