Teen Obesity

Obesity is on the rise throughout America. While this may seem like old news, it is still very important to bring awareness to. Many people are trying to bring about a change, from schools to doctors and more. Teens and children are becoming obese at an alarming rate; prompting doctors to invent a new way to treat obese teens. The new procedure brings a small sewing machine down the throat of the teen and sews the sides of the stomach together. This creates an hour glass shape inside the stomach and makes it harder for food to pass though. This limits the amount of food in the stomach can take in and thus helps weight loss.

While I’m all for the reduction of invasive surgeries, I think that marketing this surgery for teens is ridiculous. By giving kids yet another out, you are just pushing responsibility further away from them and their parents. What happened to the days when parents would tell their kids to go outside and play? What happened to kids bouncing with energy who ate wholesome meals? Well we drugged up the kids with a lot of energy, we got too scared to let our kids outdoors and we are so busy that we don’t make real meals for the children. Let’s step up people.

Instead of making kids undergo surgery and all of that nonsense, why don’t you teach your child to eat right? Teach them to cook like your parents (hopefully) taught you so they can take responsibility for they eat. Why don’t you go on a bike ride with them, make the time. Yes your normally sedimentary kid may complain, but it will be so much better for their health and welfare. Don’t trust the school to keep your child active. Recess and games have been cut down, so find a way to get out there and do something. A length of twine cost less than two dollars, yet can become perfect ties for three legged races, almost everyone has a television, radio, CD, or MP3 player somewhere, turn on the music and dance with your child. Parents it is your responsibility to get your kids up. Step up please, for your sake and theirs.
