Get Your Hands OFF My Life

Posted in Science/Technology by Amanda Roberts on Jan 28, 2008

The computer age is wonderful and virtual reality is a beautiful thing, it really is. But I really think that it is time we draw the line. The frustration of the day is Second Life, where your life can be anything you want it to be. When I first heard about it, I thought it was a glorified online Sims game, but it has become so much more than that.

Over the past few months, article after article has emerged regarding the tendency of people to take their Second Life just a tad too far. Marriages have broken up over Second Life romances, people spend hours of time a day working on perfecting their house, buying land, etc. Artists are spending their time on creating virtual works of art and now, a virtual factory that creates real life goods is featured at Sundance.

What I’m trying to say is, while advancements online are wonderful, I think it is time that people put the kind of energy they put into their virtual life into their real one. America is morbidly obese as a nation, and virtual exercise is not helping us. So let’s stop worrying about our Second life and start focusing on our first.
