Salty Pregnancy

Are you or someone you know pregnant? Important research has come to light regarding ways to reduce birth defects of the brain and spinal cord. Folic acid, key in fighting anemia, is essential before and during pregnancy. Recent studies have shown that women who take folic acid beginning a year before pregnancy can reduce the likelihood of birth defects like spina bifida and premature birth.

Another recent study has shown that magnesium sulfate given to a mother in danger of preterm labor can help stop preterm labor in its tracks. A premature baby has an increased risk of cerebral palsy, and this simple chemical—commonly called Epsom Salt—puts neither the mother or child in harm’s way and shows a marked improvement in stopping premature labor and cerebral palsy. Epsom Salts also helps the mother by lowering blood pressure in pregnant women with preeclampsia.

If you or someone you know is pregnant, please consult with your doctor with questions or concerns regarding pregnancy. You should never try to treat your own preterm labor, and do not follow the advise in this article without the care of a physician.
