The Good: Most of us—unless you have been living in a hole for the past month—know that there were hundreds of women and children taken from the Yearning for Zion ranch in Texas. These people were accused of being polygamists and the men were seen a rapists, child molesters, and sick. This led to (what I think) was a huge overreaction on the part of the state of Texas. 400 children were separated from the parents who had raised them and were placed in an overstressed foster care system.
While many people thought that the Texans were right in separating these children from their mothers and fathers, I think that it was a huge mistake. As a teacher of mine pointed out to me, the state would have only done this if they thought there was something terribly wrong. That goes to show that these children needed to stay with at least one parent. If the situation is so horrible, why would you separate children from the mothers that raised them, especially when you think that their fathers are the ones at fault? The idiocy of the situation aside, this is in today’s good news because 12 of the 400 children have been returned to their parents. Lets all hope that this is a trend that carries through all their decisions.
The Bad: Breastfeeding women often use various creams and salves to aid the cracking and dryness that comes to nipples thanks to that bundle of joy. Well it turns out that this cream could be hurting babies. Mommy’s Bliss Nipple Cream should NOT be used by breastfeeding mothers. The FDA linked the cream to vomiting, diarrhea, and respiratory distress in babies, making the cream a possibly deadly concoction. The cream has been pulled from shelves, but mothers should be aware that they should stop using both this product and any breast or nipple cream using chlorphenesin and phenoxyethanol. These two chemicals are what can damage the baby. Please read your labels and make a change.
