The Good: A new study by George Mason University has shown that talking to yourself can be a good thing! Psychology Professor Adam Winsler conducted the study and found that a vast majority of five year olds did better on tasks when they were instructed to “think aloud” or talk themselves through it. This is interesting information for many parents who may be wondering if their child is “normal” or not when they talk to themselves. This research will also lead teachers to reconsider their normal classroom management techniques.
The Bad:A Georgia man died earlier this month, thirteen years after receiving a heart transplant. The man, Sonny Graham, was found in his shed with a gunshot wound to his throat, he was 69. The story goes from tragic to twisted when Sonny’s story is looked into. Sonny received his transplant in 1995, and his heart was from a 33-year-old man named Terry Cottle. Terry had died in his home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and left behind a 29-year-old widow, Cheryl. In 1997, Sonny and Cheryl met through a donor agency. Sonny then bought Cheryl and her children a house in 2001, and he then married her in 2004. In the time between Terry’s death and her marriage to Sonny (9 years) Cheryl had married and separated from three other husbands.
The Verdict: I’m glad to see that I really am normal for talking to myself (yay!). As for this organ transplant possible double suicides… I’m confused. When I first heard about the incident my head was spinning. It seems like a tad more than a simple coincidence that two men would be married to the same woman, share the same heart, and the same death. I can’t wait to see how this pans out, it feels like a CSI moment coming up.
