Teacher Texting and Good Samaritans

The Good:Ludwig Geier, a 70-year-old machine shop owner, almost lost everything. As he was leaving First National Bank in California the wind swept the man’s recently withdrawled money all around the parking lot. In what could have been a massive robbery, about a dozen people jumped up to help Geier retrieve his money. Of the hundreds of bills that were blown away, about 96% were given back to Mr. Geier. I guess this shows that there are some good people left.

The Bad: The Lamar County School District is trying to drive a wall between teachers and students. The School District, worried about some of the teacher misconduct in other states decided to create a ban in teacher student communication on websites and text messages. The ban is meant to limit the personal conversations between teachers and students, but I think it’s just silly.

My senior year almost every teacher gave me their phone number. Over the course of the year and after I have used it multiple times to check homework, answer questions, and report my progress. Many children though are not as hone literate as they used to be, so they rely on texts and Myspace. Despite the bad things that have happens, I think that this is another method of communication. If your student could have access to their teacher for a problem, why wouldn’t you want them to have it?
