Doomsday Vault

Posted in World by Amanda Roberts on Feb 25, 2008

Well, doomsday is coming and Norway is preparing for it. Deep in the mountains of Norway, a vault filled with the world’s crop seeds has been constructed. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, or the Doomsday Vault, was funded by a trust established by the United Nations to preserve the crops of the world in case war, famine, or other natural disaster.

Seed Vaults like the Doomsday Vault exist around the world, from the wild plants vault in Sussex, England to the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics in India. The Svalbard Vault relies on a combination of refrigeration systems and the natural permafrost on the mountains to preserve the seeds for up to a thousand years. Scientists hypothesize that the location of the seed bank will allow it to survive despite the rising temperatures of the surrounding mountains and Arctic.
