Green: In honor of Earth Day, today’s post will be regarding the environment. Time released its collection of the “greenest” websites online. The results? Well there were many site I had never heard of, but some may be familiar to you.
Not so green: Florida has three major species of turtles that inhabit our beaches. As a Florida kid, I was taught to lower lights near the beach at night, and never touch turtle nests, to try and keep our turtle population up. Well this year, the Florida Loggerhead turtle population was at its lowest count in 17 years. Loggerheads are the only Florida turtles that regularly eat shrimp; a habit that many believe has led to a decrease in the turtle population. Loggerheads are a fickle turtle species though, because it can take up to thirty years for them to reproduce. This means that this year’s shortage could very well be because of environmental issues a decade or more ago. What does this show us? We need to constantly be aware of our impact. Something minor that doesn’t seem to have any effect on our present could affect our future in a major way. To support turtle rehabilitation visit your local turtle rehabilitation center.
