CNN founder Ted Turner is turning his eye to the fight against malaria. Mr. Turner founded the United Nations Foundation to administer a $1 billion to the United Nation in 1997. This foundation will now be partnering with the People of the United Methodist Church and the Lutheran World Relief to raise $200 million to educate and strengthen malaria fighting programs in Africa.
In other news, the formal inquest into the death of Princess Diana of Wales in 1997 has released its judgment. When Princess Diana, her chauffeur Henri Paul, and the Princess’s boyfriend Dodi Fayed perished in a car accident in 1997, the world shook. The Princess’s car was being chased by paparazzi when it crashed into a pole, leading many to wonder if it was the fault of the paparazzi. The inquest, which was finally held this year, was to determine if the Princess’s driver was under the influence of alcohol while he was driving and whether the paparazzi who was following the Princess was at fault for the casualties. The jury of six women and five men found that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and that the paparazzi should be held responsible for the crash
The verdict of this inquest will hopefully be the end of this horror story. I was in elementary school when the Princess died, and even I remember the effect it had on all those around me. We can only hope that this verdict leads to the memory of Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed to finally rest in peace. The crash itself though underscores something that I believe everyone should take note of. Driving under the influence is deadly. Please, do not ever get behind the wheel if you are intoxicated, and never let your someone you know get behind the wheel if they are intoxicated. Even one drink can leave you feeling “buzzed”, slowing your reaction time and lowering your inhibitions. Please, stay safe.
