The Good: About a week ago I wrote about the destruction in Myanmar (Burma) after it faced a twister. At the time of that article, foreign aid workers were still fighting for visas into the country. Unfortunately, aid workers have still not had their visas approved by the Myanmar junta, but there has been some progress.
The U.S. Air Force was allowed today to enter Myanmar to deliver relief supplies. In addition to this, four ships are near Myanmar for an annual military exercise and will aid the military junta in distributing aid if the invitation is extended. The death toll in Myanmar is now estimated to be near 63,000 with thousands of people still unaccounted for. The Myanmar government has agreed to accept foreign aid, but as of yet will only allow it to be distributed by the government.
The Bad: Just as the world begins its recovery from the Myanmar disaster, another tragedy has struck. In central China today an earthquake killed over 7,600 people. The quake happened in the Sichuan Province and hit a 7.8 on the Richter scale. Probably the most troubling deaths occurred at the schools in the Province.
So far 50 bodies have been pulled from the ruins of a high school in the province. 800 more students were feared to be buried. Five cranes and ambulances were at the scene of the high school to help excavate the trapped students. Let us hope that this is resolved quickly.
