The Good: During the earthquake in the Sichuan province of China there were 32 sources of radiation that were buried in rubble. This is in today’s good news because all 32 sources have been located. 30 of the sources were moved, and two are currently cordoned off to be removed later. The Chinese Nuclear Safety agency says that none of the materials were used to make nuclear weapons or fuel. The 32 sources are attributed to private laboratories, hospital and various factories, and the government says everything will be taken care of quickly and safety.
The Bad: Africa has some of the greatest amounts of AIDS sufferers per capita in its various countries. The U.N. and other world health organizations have devoted millions of dollars to increasing condom use and AIDS screenings in Africa. After twenty years of this strategy being used though there has yet to be a major decrease in AIDS cases in Africa. Many analysts are calling for a change.
U.N. officials are reluctant to change their strategy, especially since it has had some success in Asia. However, the U.N. is currently planning for a male circumcision campaign in Africa. Studies show that male circumcision can lead to a decrease in HIV/AIDS transmission, but the U.N. warns that it would take years to implement this plan. So what about it readers; do you have any ideas on how to reduce AIDS transmission?
