The Good: I am a proponent of legalized euthanasia. The argument for and against this willful death has fallen out of the spot light the last few years, with issues like 9/11 and the war on terror preoccupying many Americans. Well it seems like the issue will be reawakened. Booth Gardner, the former governor of Washington State, is trying to get legalized euthanasia on Washington’s November ballot.
Euthanasia is allowed in a handful of countries around the world and in a single state, Oregon. The rules for euthanasia are strict and rely on many safeguards and more than one doctor’s opinion, and this is the same standard would be applied to Washington. I support responsible (more than one doctor testifying that you have only a few months to live, etc.) euthanasia because I don’t think it is right to subject patients to horrible pain for no reason. Many people disagree with euthanasia because of their thoughts of suicide, but I say let people do as they wish, they aren’t hurting anybody.
The Bad: Readers and news watchers will know that a huge earthquake hit central China this month. Well something that residents are facing now that the quake has passed is the fear of an aftershock. Worst affected were the students and children who are scared and trying to cope with the destruction around them. Sichuan International Studies University, a university within the danger zone for aftershocks, had its students sleep out in the open to prevent any more loss. Please watch this video of the students to get an idea of how stressful this situation is.
On a completely different note, here is my commencement speech for those who are curious:
