Continuation of the Red Line

Posted in Science/Technology by Amanda Roberts on Feb 4, 2008

Windows and Dell have teamed up to fight premature AIDS deaths. Dell’s new line, which includes a PC, two notebook options and an all-in-one, will work in conjunction with Windows RED to raise money to aide those suffering from AIDS in Africa. Each purchase will trigger a $50-$80 contribution to The Global Fund. $50 is enough for four months of life-saving antiretroviral treatment.

Not ready to invest in a new PC or notebook? How about a Motorola phone? What about an American Express Red Card? If neither of these fit your lifestyle you can chose from a number of products from Apple, Gap, Converse, Armani, or Hallmark. If you are interested in any of these products or learning more about the (RED) group of products, visit Join (RED).

The Beatles on the North Star

Posted in Science/Technology, World by Amanda Roberts on Feb 3, 2008

The team at NASA is a peculiar group of Beatles fans. Driven by nostalgia and the random notion of a Beatles historian, NASA will beam a classic Beatles song “Across the Universe” to Polaris, the North Star. Why? Well, this year is the fiftieth anniversary of NASA, the forty-fifth anniversary of the Deep Space Network, and the fortieth anniversary of “Across the Universe”.

In order to complete this sky-high (literally) feat, NASA has prepared a MP3 file of the song that will be broadcast via the Deep Space Network antenna in Madrid. The MP3 file will travel near the speed of light and will make a twisting and turning trip through space to reach Polaris. The only problem is if any intelligent life form in 2439 (when the song will actually reach Polaris) would like to listen to this song, they will have to have both an antenna and receiver to convert it back to a listenable format.

The song will be broadcast at 7pm Eastern time from Madrid. Paul McCartney, co-writer of the song told NASA to “Send my love to the aliens” when asked for permission to broadcast the song. Yoko Ono, Apple, and another owner of rights to Beatles music also voiced their support to NASA. February 4th has been named unofficial “Across the Universe Day” for NASA and Beatles fans across the world.

Clooney as Peace Envoy

Posted in World by Amanda Roberts on Feb 3, 2008

George Clooney, actor and icon, has been chosen by the United Nations to be a Peace Envoy. Clooney’s oversea efforts with his humanitarian group Not On Our Watch caught the attention of the United Nations by raising over nine million dollars for Darfur. Clooney has pleaded to government bodies all over the world, asking for resources to be sent to the UN-African Union force currently stationed in Darfur.

The War in Darfur, also known as the Darfur Genocide, has been raging for years. The war, based upon tribal and ethnic disputes, has left thousands dead and even more displaced as refugees. The war has left the region destroyed, with malnutrition, starvation, and murder occurring on a daily basis. The conflict recently escalated when Darfur’s neighbor to the west, Chad, was brought into the fight yesterday. Thousands of soldiers entered Chad yesterday, surrounding the palace of the president and setting of explosions.

If you would like to help the effort to help those affected by the War in Darfur, please feel free to donate to CARE, Doctors Without Borders, UNICEF or the American Refugee Committee International.
